Housing affordability - action by governments essential

The COAG Reform Council report on affordable housing released today is further evidence that Australia’s housing market is increasingly failing people living on low incomes, according to Anglicare Australia’s Executive Director Kasy Chambers.

“The CAOG Reform Council was set up to report directly to the Council of Australian Governments on government performance” Ms Chambers said today.

“This report is on the National Affordable Housing Agreement. It found that rental affordability has worsened, particularly for those on low incomes, with home purchase less affordable for buyers on low to moderate incomes, too.

“This comes as no surprise to Anglicare agencies across Australia who conducted a rental housing snapshot in April that found the rental market spiralling out of control and virtually no housing right across the country that was affordable for people living on the lowest incomes.
