With the aged and community care system facing major reform, and a range of legal/social/ethical questions about end of life care a feature of public debate, this mini–conference is a great opportunity to

      • connect to colleagues in the Anglicare network,
  • explore end of life care, issues and innovations as they are developing across Australia,
  • touch base on industry reform, and
  • plan further network activity.

If your work is in aged and community care, spiritual and pastoral care, or you are just interested in some of the big changes and challenges happening across our society; the Anglicare Aged and Community Care Network’s first ever Mini–Conference offers you something to get your imagination and teeth into.

 

Dinner — Thursday 4 August

The conference kicks off with dinner and guest speaker Colleen Geyer, who will talk on Spirituality towards the end of life. Colleen is the Director of Mission for Blue Care, with responsibility for the missional culture, Chaplaincy Services, connecting with the wider Uniting Church, and environmental sustainability. Colleen also chairs UnitingCare Queensland’s Human Research Ethics Committee.

The conference continues through Friday with top class guest speakers, round table discussions, and collaborative planning for future research and events.

 

Guest speakers

  • Professor Colleen Cartwright is Foundation Professor of Aged Services at Southern Cross University. She has extensive teaching and research experience in ageing, ethics and medical decisions at the end of life, at national and international levels, and provides consultancy on older people's issues to local, state and national government departments and agencies. Colleen has written extensively on planning for end of life for Alzheimer’s Australia.

Presentation - Advance Care Planning, start the conversation

  • Professor David Currow is Professor of Palliative and Supportive Services at Flinders University, and the foundation Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Australia. Among other projects, he is co-chief investigator on an anthology of evidence for palliative care practice and service delivery – www.caresearch.com.au. David holds grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the National Institutes of Health (USA) and the Cancer Council Australia.

Presentation - A system wide approach to palliative care

  • Professor Patsy Yates is jointly appointed as Professor of Nursing at Queensland University of Technology, and Director for Queensland Health’s Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education, As Director, Patsy leads a range of programs focused on developing workforce capacity in palliative care, researching priority issues in palliative care, and strengthening the nexus between research, policy and practice.

The conference will also include round table discussions, shared planning for us as a network, and an update on the reform agenda.
